More:

The immune system, characterized by its numerous and intricate interactions, serves to safeguard the host against pathogenic microorganisms and facilitates the clearance of damaged tissues. It is also implicated in the continuous “monitoring” and elimination of malignant cells that may arise within the human body. Such a role is contingent upon numerous factors, among which is the adequate intake of nutrients, including vitamins. The impact of vitamin supplementation on the modulation of the immune response has consistently been the subject of numerous studies. Vitamins A and D have been demonstrated to exert the most significant immune-modulatory effects. In this review, we explore and contemplate the potential roles of vitamins A and D on the immune response via innate and adaptive immune cells, with a particular emphasis on the cell population recently identified as innate lymphoid cells. Recent literature data suggest that vitamin A and its metabolites regulate the equilibrium between Th1 and Th2 immunity. Additionally, vitamin D exhibits protective effects on the innate immune system and inhibitory effects on adaptive immunity.
